今年10月初めに「市町村長と語る旅」で埼玉県宮代町の“新しい村”を訪問しました。当日は秋晴れに恵まれ絶好のグリーン・ツーリズム日和でした。
“新しい村”に着くや否や農産物直売所に直行しました。何といっても直売所は新鮮・完熟な野菜が魅力で、朝一番に行かないとなかなかお目当ての野菜を買えません。そこで東京駅を朝8時に出発して“新しい村”に到着して最初に直売所に向かったということです。
たったひとつ残っていた新鮮そのものの小松菜を買ったほか、おいしいと評判の高い利平栗、めったに見かけない地元産の黒ゴマなどを買いました
さんまと言えば大根おろし。しかしさんまの季節には何故か少ない大根が葉付きで売られていたので、思わず買いたくなりましたが持ち帰るには重すぎるということで断念。
その後田んぼに行き、稲刈り体験をしました。怪我をしないように、稲はこう掴んで、鎌はこう持ってと指導を受け、たわわに実った黄金の一束を一気に刈り取りました。日常生活では味わえない爽快感を満喫。お子さん達もお母さんと一緒に稲刈りにチャレンジ。皆とても楽しそうでした。
刈った稲をこの頃はあまり見かけなくなった“はさ掛け”にして、次にプロがコンバインで脱穀するのをしばし見学。さらにその後釜で炊飯体験。釜の炊飯が静かなブームとなっているようです。釜は意外にもかなり複雑な構造をしています。そこで向学のため、釜を分解して参加者が組み立てにチャレンジ。
めでたく組み立てが終わると“もみがら”を入れ、まずは新聞紙に火を付けそれから“もみがら”を燃やすという手順で炊飯開始。炊きあがるまでの間、釜で炊いたご飯が何故おいしいか、“もみがら”を使うことがいかに環境に優しく、資源を無駄なく使う昔の人の知恵の賜物か、また、灰は肥料に、藁は草履などの加工品をつくるなど、稲はすべてを利用して、リサイクルしてきたことなどの説明を受けました。
ご飯が炊き終わるといよいよ食事。宮代町長さんを囲んで採れたて野菜の天ぷらなど地産地消の昼食をいただきました。皆さん大満足。
その後、ハーブ園など広大な“新しい村”を散策して、最後にまた直売所に行きました。そこで発見したのが直売所の地域貢献。
いくつかの小学校の名前が書かれたボードがあり、各小学校の名前の書かれた所の下の箱に直売所のレシートを入れるとその金額の１％がその学校に寄付されるということで小生も地域貢献に参加しました。
“新しい村”は都心から約40㎞、それなのに緑豊かで多様かつ本格的なグリーン・ツーリズムを楽しめることに感動しました。

I visited “Atarashii Mura (New village )” in October of this year as part of “Shichosoncho To Kataru Tabi”. This is a tour around local governments to consult with district mayors about the promotion of Green Tourism. It was fine in autumn and a great day for enjoining Green Tourism.
We left by bus from a place near Tokyo Station to “Atarashii Mura”, and as soon as we arrived, we went a farmer’ market. As the freshest vegetables are very attractive for urban citizens, they sell out in a very short time.
I bought a number of things including a vegetable called Komatuna(the last one available), some very popular chestnuts called Rihei, and locally produced black sesame.
Though autumn is the season for enjoying Sanma fish (saury) with grated radish, radishes are rarely found at this time. Luckily I found fresh radishes with leaves, but I couldn’t buy them because they were too heavy.
Then we went to harvest rice in paddy fields. An instructor told us to “Grab a bunch of rice plants like this, and hold the sickle like this in order not to be hurt.”
I cut the golden ripe rice quickly with a sickle. It was extremely comfortable even though I’d never experienced it before.
Even children with their mothers tried it. All of them seemed very happy.
After that, the harvested rice was dried in the autumn sun.
We also watched as the instructor threshed the harvest with a threshing machine.
And then we went a next step of boiling the rice with a Japanese style iron pot whose structure was very complicated.
To help us understand the structure the instructor disassembled one of the pots, and a participant tried to reassemble it before we started boiling the rice and the chaff together..
While we were boiling rice the instructor explained to us that the reason for using chaff is that it makes the rice delicious and that our ancestors used the whole of the rice crop. For example, ash as fertilizer and rice stalks as Japanese shoes. Rice farmers practiced recycling in the past.
We enjoyed a lunch which was full of local delicacies such as Tempura with the district mayor. And all of participants were greatly satisfied.
Then we walked through a herb garden and other places and came back to the farmers’ market where I found new activities.
There was a notice board on which the names of elementary schools were written. If you put the receipt of the farmers’ market into the box of a school, 1% of the total amount of receipts will be donated to the school. Of course I put my receipt into the box.
Although “Atarashii Mura” is about 40km away from Tokyo, it has abundant nature where you can enjoy Green Tourism to your heart’s content. It is very impressive indeed.
